WHERE THERE’S SMOKE, THERE’S FIRE … at the old barn! On Saturday, November 14 a “controlled burn” was conducted on the property of the Newagen Seaside Inn on Southport Island. Southport Fire Chief Gerry Gamage coordinated the efforts of the island’s department as well as Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb and East Boothbay. Departments used the event for training exercises for both seasoned firefighters and junior firefighters on the scene. All told, 45 firefighters participated in the event that began at 7 a.m. and ended at 10:30 a.m. Future plans for the location, adjacent to the Pine Room and Little Inn; include a vegetable garden and an area for recreation and amenities.                        Staff Photo/John Edwards
