Mackenzie Arrington, son of Maine Lobster Chef of the Year 2008 Margaret Salt McLellan, was crowned Maine Lobster Chef of the Year 2009 after a cook-off competition at Harvest on the Harbor, the three-day food and wine festival underway on Portland’s waterfront October 22-24.

School consolidation repeal

on the November 3 ballot

If Boothbay peninsula voters vote with their pocketbooks in mind, ballot question 3, to repeal the 2007 school consolidation law, should be a no-brainer. Boothbay, Boothbay Harbor, Edgecomb and Southport all overwhelmingly rejected the school consolidation plan developed to meet the requirements of the 2007 legislation.

School department announces flu clinics

The H1N1 (swine) flu has been confirmed in three Wiscasset students and both Wiscasset high school and middle school have reported a high number of students absent with influenza-like symptoms. As of Monday, Superintendent Eileen King reported that Boothbay peninsula schools had no confirmed cases of H1N1 flu and that the number of absences due to flu-like illnesses remained low.

BHPD warns residents to be on lookout for suspicious cars

Earlier this fall, Lincoln Sheriff’s Department apprehended some thieves who were scouting for, and then burglarizing, unoccupied homes on Barter’s Island. On Tuesday, Boothbay Harbor Police Chief Robert Hasch said that his officers had stopped two vehicles in Boothbay Harbor in the last two days whose occupants appeared to have the same motive.

Land Trust reports thefts

from preserve donation tubes

It was recently discovered that Boothbay Region Land Trust’s donation tubes at all of its major preserves had been broken into. The locks were cut and the cash donations were missing. Hoping that this was a one-time event, all of the locks were replaced. Unfortunately, within one week, many of the locks on these steel donation tubes were again cut.

A quiet night in Boothbay Harbor

The Boothbay Harbor Board of Selectmen may have set a record for brevity in its Monday, October 26 meeting. In just 10 minutes, the board considered financial data, approved public notices, and agreed to roof repairs at the Fish Pier. Marveling at their efficiency, Chairman Bruce Engert joked that he had ample time to catch "Dancing with the Stars."

St. Andrews Free Bed Fund has legacy of community generosity

The handwritten notes in the St. Andrews’ Free Bed Fund ledger trace a tale of generosity that goes back generations.

Created to help patients of St. Andrews Hospital, the Free Bed Fund’s first big fund-raiser was the Midsummer Ball in August of 1937, an event the Boothbay Register called the "biggest social event of the season."

Accused town clerk pleads ‘no contest’

Former Wiscasset Town Clerk Sandra Johnson changes her "not guilty" plea to "no contest." She will be sentenced in December.

How much is too much to pay for a car? Certainly, not $1. But that’s what one family, or person, will pay if selected by Atlantic Motor Car in Wiscasset to receive a completely refurbished 1994 Volvo station wagon. As if that’s not enough, the company will also service the car for an entire year.
