Timothy D. Hurd
Timothy D. Hurd, 62, died on Saturday October 10 at George
Washington University Hospital in Washington, D.C. after a short
illness.
Tim was born in Portland, the son of Lester and Mary Hurd. He grew
up in Freeport before moving to Ann Arbor, Michigan where he met his
wife Suzanne at the University of Michigan. Upon graduation with a
degree in naval architecture and marine engineering, the couple
moved to Maine.
After working in East Boothbay at Paul Luke Shipyard, Tim went on to
work at Bath Iron Works for twenty years where he was instrumental
in designing radar resistant destroyers. In 1993 Tim and Sue moved
to Arlington, Virginia where he worked as a consultant to the Navy
for Alion Science and Technology until the time of his death.
A caring man whose smile and laughter always brought joy to a room,
Tim was a man of many talents. He enjoyed working with his hands;
from wood working and stone masonry to growing and propagating
orchids. His talent also extended to his writing, from technical
documentation to poetic verse. He was a man who loved learning and
used his knowledge to fix almost anything or make anything from home
brews to templates for his wife's quilting. Tim was always willing
to lend a hand to those who asked. Anything from pruning trees to
home repairs, he was always willing to help. Besides love for his
family, his love extended to Scottish Terriers.
Tim was predeceased by his brother Peter and his father Lester. He
is survived by his wife Suzanne of Boothbay Harbor, a son Mark of
Portland, a son Paul and his wife Shirlenne of Washington, D.C., his
mother Mary of Topsham, a brother, Chris and his wife Kathy of
Bryant Pond, a brother David and his wife Mary of Freeport, his
sister-in-law, Donna of Dallas, Texas, and his nephews Nathan and
family and Matthew and his nieces Brenda and Rebecca. His five
Scottish Terriers will miss their nightly game of fetch with father.
Visiting hours were held Thursday, October 15 at Simmons, Harrington
& Hall Funeral Home in Boothbay. The funeral was held Friday,

Nils Soren
Sjostrom
Nils Soren Sjostrom, 88, was born in Gavle, Sweden on May 19, 1921
and passed away peacefully on October 13. He grew up just north of
Stockholm until 1929 when he and his mother, Elsa Viktoria Eriksson
Sjostrom, emigrated to the United States, joining his father, Frans
Einar Alfred Sjostrom in Huntington, Long Island.
He joined the U.S. Navy in 1941 and the spent the majority of his
service in the south Pacific aboard the USS North Carolina. He was
honorably discharged from the Navy in 1947.
He married Gertrude (Gertie) Harrington, the true love of his life,
on October 25, 1944 in Madison, New Jersey. For almost 40 years he
was employed by the Jersey Bell Telephone Company and was a
volunteer police officer.
The highlight of every year was the weeks spent in Maine. Each
summer they would pack up their three sons and head to Boothbay, a
tradition which now lives on in the current generations. Upon Nils’
retirement from the phone company, he and Gertie relocated to
Southport in 1983. They developed a strong circle of friends and
became actively involved in the community.
He will best be remembered by all who knew and loved him as an
engaging conversationalist and wonderful storyteller. He was an avid
gardener and loved his books. He proudly served every community in
which he lived and made friends wherever he went. But above all
else, he was a family man. He was a man who truly knew what was most
important in life, a man who knew that life can be quite simple, if
one allows it to be, and that people, not things are man’s true
treasure.
Nils was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude, in 1998. He is survived
