Seahawk math team wraps up stellar season

The Boothbay Region Seahawk mathematics team concluded its season on April 10 with its annual “Genius Trophy” competition, a madcap math and trivia marathon among team members resulting in the presentation of the Genius Trophy to the last person standing. This year it was Hannah Hills, an 11th grade student who nosed out junior Chase Mansfield and freshman Casey Phelps.

The team had a very successful season that included:

  • Finishing as the first-place team in our division of the Central Maine Math League for the regular season.
  • Finishing as the second place team in the Mountain Valley Conference math tournament, losing only to Maranacook High School.
  • Finishing in fourth place in the state of Maine Math Tournament at the Augusta Civic Center, again in our division, losing only to three selective private schools/academies.

In addition to a math-mania pathfinder drill that involved competitors running up and down the hallway to get their next questions, the Genius Trophy competition required the students to answer questions on geography (What body of water lies between Croatia and Italy?), sports (What does one call three strikes in a row in bowling?), and general knowledge (Who is the Prime Minister of the U.K.?).

With the conclusion of the state meet and the genius trophy competition, the math team lies down the calculators for a well-deserved break.  These students have been at it since September and have volunteered their time, expertise, and school pride to put their best forward at seven away competitions during the six and a half month season.  And they represented the school fantastically.  So said Principal Tricia Campbell in a rousing talk to the team on the final day as she presented each person with a BRHS academic honors certificate.

The 2023-2034 math team members include:

  • BRES Middle School student Jackson Zehm.
  • 9th graders Ronan Drage and Casey Phelps.
  • 10th graders Abby Orchard (the team’s top scorer for the year), Sarah Harris, Maddie Andreasen, Hannah Kreft and Kora McKenney.
  • 11th graders Sawyer Blake, Hannah Hills and Chase Mansfield.
  • 12th graders Duncan Hardwick and Suzie Edwards.

The team is coached by Peter and Nancy Gilchrist.
